How to Avoid Overpacking

By: Susan Finch

Vacation planning fatigue is real, with the majority of travelers feeling stressed out over at least one key area around travel. According to Travel Agent Central, 49% of travelers packing is a top-ranked stressor. But more isn’t necessarily better. Fewer options, a lighter load, and the ability to just slip on an outfit and go can simplify your vacation and reduce your stress level. Not sure where to start? Here’s how to avoid overpacking and savor a stress-free vacation.

Choose the Right Suitcase

Overpacking usually spirals when you reach for an oversized suitcase with room to spare. Unless you’re doubling up into one suitcase with a family member, there’s really no need to pack a large bag. You’ll also find it’s too tempting to leave out your favorite outfits and back-ups when your bag is only half full. Instead, reach for a standard-sized suitcase that fits into the overhead compartment of an airplane or a roomy weekender bag and start packing. You’ll still have plenty of room and be all packed up in no time.

Plan for Layers

Florida’s weather may call for endless sunshine, wind, rain, or even an unexpected drop in temperature at night. But that doesn’t mean you can’t optimize your packing by layering. Load up on your favorite shorts, dresses, and shirts and add in a mix of sweaters or sweatshirts. They key is to reach for items that easily mix together with just about everything in your suitcase.

Consider a Capsule Wardrobe

If you’re looking to refresh your closet, consider building a capsule wardrobe. Coined in London in the 1970s, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential items that don’t go out of fashion like classic shirts, skirts, and jackets. You can also create a vacation capsule wardrobe out of pieces you already have in your closet. Carefully pair items that can seamlessly blend together and add in a pair of sandals, dressy shoes if you’re headed out to dinner, and a rugged pair for any hiking. The end result is a fresh, timeless look that also minimizes your packing to just the essentials.

Rent Locally

Did you ever wish you didn’t have to pack your snorkeling equipment, toys, portable cribs, and camera gear on every vacation? Try renting locally through area businesses and have everything you need delivered right to your Southwest Florida vacation rental or hotel. It may cost a little more than bringing your own supplies, but will save valuable time and stress in the process. And remember you can also have groceries, toiletries, and other necessities delivered instead of rushing out to stock up your rental the moment you get to your destination.

Question Everything

One of the simplest ways to avoid overpacking is to question everything that goes into your bag. Do you really need multiple pairs of sandals or can you get by with one? Do you absolutely require three swimsuits or will two suffice? The more you question what you need, the more intentional you can be with your packing to keep your load a little lighter on your next vacation.

A lighter suitcase also means less time and money spent shuffling your stuff around on vacation. But the best part might be the extra room in your bag, leaving plenty of space for souvenirs and new travel keepsakes.
